It's like having eight chargers! The 7th generation Powerex microprocessor features a 0.001V resolution delivering just the right charge! The microprocessor that is powering the MH-C808M battery charger is state of the art. It features eight analog-to-digital converters with precision resolution at 0.001V (that’s one thousandth of a volt) per battery delivering just-the-right-charge. It’s like having eight individual "computer controlled" battery chargers! Users can mix any battery capacity, battery brand, and/or sizes without the fear of overcharging or undercharging. Maha’s unique “Digital Signal Processing” noise-reduction algorithms ensure that the signals do not cross talk. This is an Ultra Precision charger. Even the circuit board is manufactured from a reinforced fiberglass material compound.   Users often are confused by the various solid, flashing, red, green and yellow displays on traditional LED battery chargers. The MH-C808M battery charger features a 2cm by 6cm large LCD displaying information for each rechargable battery. In addition, unlike other LCD battery chargers, this one actually delivers useful information in English, such as “CONDITION”, “CHARGE”, and “DONE”, as well as rechargeable battery level and status. The LCD displays a charge level for each battery as it is charging. This display is actually a 5 level display as follows: No Bar, 1 Bar , 2 Bars, 3 Bars , and 4 Bars. We actually found this display to be highly accurate. When the 2nd bar displays you can figure that the battery is at least 60% charged and when the 3rd Bar displays about 85% charged. An interesting note here: 95% of most other manufacturers battery chargers are only capable of charging rechargeable batteries up to 75% to 85% of their rated capacity at most. This means that you would be getting about 2000 mAh from a 2500 mAh rechargeable battery. This is especially true of the ones which claim that their chargers are lightning cool during their charge cycle. However using the MH-C808M you can be assured of an accurate and precise charge for your batteries each and every time.

   The Maha MH-C808M battery charger features a completely redesigned conditioning algorithm which cycles your rechargeable batteries automatically once the Conditioning button is pressed. It will first charge the battery, rest, deep discharge then recharging them all without user intervention. It is particularly useful in restoring older rechargeable batteries as well as exercising batteries periodically. The manually-activated conditioning means that user decides when it is needed. Single button activates automatic deep cycling ( charge - discharge - charge ) of batteries.

1) Unlike most chargers, the MH-C808M (and MH-C801D) uses a dual-stage PWM (pulse-width management) circuit to maintain the constant charging current. The first stage PWM is a high-frequency one (several hundred KHz) and establishes a fixed 2.0A current. This is done all in the AC adapter. Then, based on the microcontroller in the charger, a second low-frequency (on the order of hertz) PWM controller regulates the 2.0A to modulate it to different currents by altering the duty cycle. For example, when you use Soft Charging, the current is 2.0A but the duty cycle is a little less than 50% resulting in an averaged current of ~1.0A. Similarly, when a AAA is detected, the current is still 2.0A but the duty cycle is only 1/3.

So if you use a ammeter to measure the current, make sure it is time averaged (otherwise you will see the meter oscillate between 0 and 2A). The best way is to use a current-probe on a scope.

2) The MH-C808M uses a very intelligent conditioning algorithm. In a nutshell, the charger will let the batteries to rest until all batteries are charged before going to discharge. Similarly, the charger will wait until all the batteries are discharged before going to charge. While charging, however, the charger will show the next step (ie. in the initial charge, two batteries might show charge and 6 batteries show discharge - the six batteries are actually "standing by" for discharge. Discharge commences only when all batteries have finished charging.) The purpose of this is to allow for sufficient time to elapse between charge-discharge without waiting too long. Many designers omit the rest time, but is critical for maximizing battery life cycles.

This is the reason behind the perception of a "long" charge during the conditioning cycle. The batteries actually don't start charging (despite LCD display) until all batteries are discharged. You can detect the moment the charger starts charging when all the CHARGE indicators are on for the first time.

Maha didn't want to clutter the already-small LCD with another "REST" symbol so this was the compromise!

3) The AAA discharge current is at 1/3 duty cycle. If Soft Charging and Conditioning is enabled simultaneously, the discharge (and charge) current is at 1/2 duty cycle for AA and 1/6 duty cycle for AAA.

  The MH-C808M battery charger provides the user with the option to choose between a soft charge and a fast charge mode. The soft charge delivers the highest rechargeable battery life and allows 100% compatibility with older, lower capacity batteries. The Soft charge current is 50% of the Fast charge current. The fast charge allows eight batteries to be fully charged to their maximum capacity in around one hour!

 The slow charging rate enhances battery life but at the cost of the recharge time. The MH-C808M solves this problem by offering a user-selectable “Soft Charging” mode. In such mode, the MH-C808M Battery Charger will use a slow 2 hour charge with low-temperature termination to maximize battery charge acceptance and life. When time is of the essence, the normal charging mode will recharge in around 1 hour.
